Chapter Seventeen

“Really?”

“What do you mean, really? Why do you have to shit on every single thing I do?”

“No, I didn’t mean it like that—“

“Right. You know, Cait, if you didn’t have such a bad vibe, things might have turned out different for you. It’s like, karma… you know, man? As long as you keep dwelling on the past, your life is going to keep sucking—”

Wow, Cait thought as her ex-husband proceeded to explain to her why all of her life’s difficulties were actually caused by her not doing enough positive thinking. Approximately a billion smart ass, passive aggressive responses ran through her head while he prattled on, expounding upon his freshly minted new age ideas.

She knew not to take the bait though. Jason knew just how to push her buttons and she wasn’t going to let him get to her. Not when she was still on her new-man high from her night with Felix.

“Okay, well, all I’m saying is that it would have been nice if you’d have mentioned it to me first.”

“So now I need your permission to take my own kids on vacation? During my time? Get real.”

Cait grit her teeth and poured herself a big mug of coffee. Then she poured a second cup for Molly, followed by a glass of orange juice for Parker and a glass of milk for Helen. Next, she took out the ingredients for bacon waffles, which was her ‘special occasion’ Sunday breakfast.

“Is everything okay?” Molly asked her mother, her voice trying to hide her concern.

Damn, Cait thought. She must have caught me grimacing on the phone. Cait had gone through an extraordinary effort to appear friendly with Jason in front of her children. Everything she’d ever read about divorced parenting had emphasized the important of maintaining a good relationship - or at least appearing to maintain a good relationship - with one’s ex in front of one’s children.

Unfortunately Jason was making that effort borderline impossible.

It’s okay, Cait mouthed to Molly, waving to the coffee she’d just pored.

“So is there anything special they need to pack?”

“Pack?!?” Molly interrupted.

Shhh, Cait shushed her.

“Well, it’s a ski trip, so they need ski stuff.”

“Jason they don’t have ski stuff. None of them know how to ski.”

“Well they need ski stuff if they want to ski. Obviously. And I don’t know… soap? Deodorant? Do kids even wear deodorant? Some spending money? Why do you not even know what your own children need to survive for a single weekend?”

“Jason how the hell am I supposed to get them all outfitted with ski stuff in three days? I’ve never even been skiing. How would I even know what the hell they need?” Caitlyn was losing her temper.

“Skiing?” Helen asked, joining her sister in the kitchen.

“Anyhow, can you please just take some responsibility and think about someone other than yourself for one second and get them packed for this trip? I’ll be there to pick them up Wednesday at two.”

With that Jason hung up on Caitlyn, leaving her wondering how the hell she was going to get three kids ready for a skiing weekend in three days.
